heat tolerant lettuce trial
we trialed 20 varieties that claimed some type of heat tolerance. now, of course, inland Southern California heat is different than heat in other parts of the country, so although some didn’t exhibit good heat tolerance for us, they may for other parts of the country.
we created a microclimate to keep the 20 lettuce varieties comfortable. seeds were sown 5/24. we had a shade cloth positioned for protection from the harsh uv rays, and they got an irrigation spray twice a day. being inland Southern California we had several days over 100 degrees with average temp in the upper 90’s. there ended up being 6 varieties that grew perfect beautiful heads that were bitter free!
